Cable drive stair lifts are one of the four types of common stair lift drives; The other three are rack & pinion, chain, and screw. Many manufacturers have discontinued their cable drive stair lift models due to dependability and size issues. Most current models are designed with a rack and pinion drive. Some heavy duty stair lifts still use a cable drive.
Cable drive stair lifts operate using a steel cable and a pulley. Slack in the cable can lead to starts and stops that are not as smooth when compared to a rack & pinion drive system.
