Stairlift manufacturers define a maximum weight capacity for their stair lifts. Some models can accommodate more or less weight depending on the length of the stairlift track and/or the incline of the stairs. Most manufacturers will accommodate up to 250 pounds. Premium models will typically support up to 350 pounds. At the time of this writing there is only one model rated for a maximum weight above 350 pounds, the AmeriGlide Heavy Duty.

Expect to pay more for models that can handle weights in excess of 250 pounds. Heavier weights require larger motors, larger batteries, and sturdier tracks.

Most stair lifts are purchased for an individual in need and the stair lift should accommodate their weight. Heavier visitors may necessitate the need for a stairlift with a heavier rating.
